Mexican authorities are investigating a fatal attack that has reportedly left at least three Matamoros police officers dead.
Sources told Action 4 News that the deadly attack took place on Wednesday evening.
At least three were reported killed while others were wounded.
No suspect description was given but it's believed the attackers got away.
The Mexican Army and other federal officials were reported at the Matamoros Police Department through Wednesday night.
The telephone number at the police department remained busy for more than two hours.
Officials from neither the Army nor the Mexican Attorney General's Office had immediate information about the incident.
The Wednesday evening incident is the first reported attack on the Matamoros police, which had until now been spared violence directed at police departments in Reynosa and across the State of Tamaulipas.
Dozens of police officers and a handful of police chiefs have been killed in the violence.
The latest attack on local police took place over the weekend in Valle Hermoso, which is about 30 minutes west of Matamoros.
Matamoros is home to the Gulf Cartel, which is engaged in a war with its former ally the Zetas drug cartel.
