A Reynosa city official was slain in the city's downtown on Thursday afternoon.
Tamaulipas state officials reported that the city employee's body had been found inside a vehicle in downtown Reynosa.
Sources identified the slain city official as Reynosa Public Works Director Roberto Arechandieta-Ramos.
Tamaulipas state officials confirmed he had been shot to death.
No arrests have been made on the case but state authorities are investigating the case.
Reynosa city officials asked area residents to avoid the downtown area following reports of a "situation of risk" between 4:12 and 5:12 p.m. Thursday.
City officials confirmed on their Twitter account that the incident took place at the intersection of Calle Zaragoza and Calle Nicolas Bravo.
The busy interesection is just a few blocks west of the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.
Arechandieta-Ramos' death comes hours after another slaying in nearby Valle Hermoso where a candidate for mayor, his son and his nephew were also found shot to death on Thursday morning.
The two incidents come one day after a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) bulletin was leaked to the public warning of a "narco-showdown" between rival drug trafficking organizations.
The internal DPS bulletin warned local law enforcement officials about flyers and email circulating stating this weekend would be "one of the bloodiest in Mexico's history".
Law enforcement officials later confirmed the authenticity of the bulletin.
